Ceiling Fan Buying Guide

Home Deck In Summer

Now that you've read our reviews of some top-rated ceiling fans, let's get into the buying guide. First we're going to look at the top five things that you should be thinking about in your next ceiling fan, and then we're going to talk about two of the numbers that get tossed around most when speaking about ceiling fans: CFM and RPMs. If you are looking for an alternative to a ceiling fan you might want to look into buying the best tower fan for better air circulation and purification in your home. You can read more about that in our tower fan article.

Why Get a Ceiling Fan?

When it comes to the reason behind getting a ceiling fan, one of the most common is this: a ceiling fan will cool your room. But did you know that you can also improve air quality with a ceiling fan? Here are some of the top reasons why you should be getting and installing a ceiling fan in your home.

Healthy Airflow

As we said, the air circulation that a ceiling fan provides can help promote healthy airflow in your home. This airflow keeps air moving through your existing HVAC system and keeps allergens and pollutants in your HVAC filters where they belong

Energy Efficient Cooling

A window air conditioner or traditional window fan can be extremely expensive to run. A ceiling fan is generally a much more energy efficient option, and can help distribute the cooling while making sure your HVAC bill stays low. In some cases, just the air circulation and cooling that a ceiling fan provides can be enough and you don’t even need to turn on the AC.

If you're still concerned about energy use, check whether the model you're considering is Energy Star certified. Energy Star rated fans can use up to 20% less energy than non-rated fans, meaning your energy bill stays lower while you enjoy the same amount of air circulation.

Energy Efficient Heating

On the opposite side of the spectrum, when it’s winter and you have the heat running, where does the hot air like to go? That’s right, up to the ceiling. A fan that can run clockwise in the winter will gently guide air up from below and force warm air down along the walls. Not only does this bring warm air where you can enjoy it, it also provides an energy efficient thermal curtain along the walls that keeps the cold walls from chilling the air in the room.

Make sure to read our articles on top-rated space heaters, the best electric baseboard heaters, and most popular electric wall heaters for more tips and information about Energy Star rated appliances and energy efficient heating in your home.

Things to Think About In Your Ceiling Fan

The best ceiling fan for you will ultimately have a balance of the features and factors you need. Here are the main things that you should be considering when looking for the best ceiling fan for your home.

What Size Room?

Unless you're getting an outdoor ceiling fan, one of the first considerations is of course calculating what size room you will be placing the ceiling fan in. Generally the more cubic feet per minute that your fan is able to move, the larger room it will be able to work with. If your room gets too large, then you will want to consider getting two or more fans. Look at the recommended rating for the fan to determine whether or not it will be right for your room.

Mounting Considerations

Type of Ceiling (Angled or Flat)

When thinking about the type of ceilings for your ceiling fan, you want to look at the angle, and the height. The angle of the ceiling will determine whether you need an angle mounting kit. In some cases ceiling fans do not need a mounting kit as long as the pitch of the ceiling is under a certain angle. Of course, if you have a standard flat ceiling, then you don't have to worry about making sure that your fan can be angle mounted.

Type of Mount

When looking at your next ceiling fan, make sure that it comes with the mounting system necessary to get your fan to the necessary height. These are the three most common systems: standard downrod (3 to 5 inches in length), extended downrod (up to five feet in length), and flush mount (should be used when the ceiling is 8 feet or lower).

Mounting Height

Your ceiling fan is going to be moving air around for you. The closer the fan is to the floor the more wind you're going to feel. So if you like the feeling of that breeze in the summertime, you want to get a fan that can provide that. That means either getting one that is able to move more air, or one that can be installed closer to the floor.

When it comes to mounting your fan, generally you want it to be between 7 and 9 feet above the floor. This height will give you optimal air flow in both summer and winter. The mounting system that you choose will be determined on the angle of your ceiling as we spoke before.

Fan Blade Size

Fan blade size is essentially a way of determining how much are your fan is going to move or the CFM rating. But when looking at your fan blade dimensions, you want to be sure that they are not going above and beyond what is efficient. The main dimensions that determine fan blade size are length, width, pitch, and fan blade span or diameter.

Blade length

The length of the blade determines the overall circular diameter of the fan. This is important because it helps to show you what size room and what area your fan will need. The length of the blade also works in conjunction with the other two Dimensions to create the horizontal surface area that will provide the total CFM movement.

Fan Blade Width

The width of a fan blade is an important dimension that works in conjunction with the pitch. These create the total horizontal surface area that is able to move the air.

Fan Blade Pitch

The pitch of a blade is referring to the angle of the blade from the horizontal plane. The greater the pitch, the greater the horizontal area that will be pushing the air. However, when the pitch gets to be too great then you need to expend more energy in order to get the same amount of air moving. In general, 13° is roughly the sweet spot for most ceiling fans. Anything greater than that and you're going to run into diminishing returns for energy used and anything less, you are leaving air movement on the table.

Diameter

The total diameter of a fan can often help you determine what size of room you should put it in. Ceiling fans come in sizes from very small (under 30 inches) to extremely large (60 inches in diameter or more) Here’s a chart that lists the recommended fan size for each corresponding room size:

  • Under 100 square feet: 29 to 36
  • 101 to 144 square feet (12 ft x 12 ft): 38 to 42
  • 145 to 225 square feet (15 ft x 15 ft): 44 to 46
  • 226 to 400 square feet (20 ft x 20 ft): 48 to 54
  • Over 400 square feet: 56 to 60

If you need a fan for a larger surface area, consider getting multiple fans for your space. Two or more ceiling fans can work together in conjunction to provide better cooling and air circulation.

Light Kits

A light kit is essentially a way to provide lighting for your room that is wired in with the ceiling fan. These lights can be functional or decorative, or a combination of the two.

The best light kits will use new LED lights for longer life. They still provide just as much illumination, and with the light shield that covers them, you remove some of the pinpoint glare that LED lights sometimes suffer from. A bonus to getting an LED kit is that the light bulbs have a life of about 10 years. And of course, a longer life means that you don't have to climb a ladder to change the bulbs.

Understanding CFM vs RPM

Two of the most common numbers that get thrown around when talking about the power and efficiency of a ceiling fan are the cubic feet per minute and RPM. The two of them are connected but the most important statistic is by far cubic foot per minute. That's because this is the bottom line as far as how much are the fan is moving. While RPM is important, the RPM works together with the dimensions of your fan to determine the CFM rating.

When you know how much power or energy your ceiling fan uses, then you can get an idea about its efficiency. And a lot of cases, this is reported as cubic feet per minute per watt. This essentially tells you how much air you're moving for the amount of energy that you are expending. While this can help you determine which fan is going to be less expensive to run, you should still be looking at the overall CFM to get the best ceiling fan for your room. Here are some CFM rating guidelines for different areas:

  • Small Rooms under 200 square feet: Up to 3000 CFM
  • Kitchens, Dining Rooms, and Bedrooms up to 300 square feet: 3000 to 4000 CFM
  • Large Bedrooms, Family Rooms, or Living Rooms up to 450 square feet: 4000 to 6000 CFM
  • Open basements, large rec rooms over 450 square feet: 5000 to 9000 CFM
