Oil Filled Heater Buying Guide
Now that you’re acquainted with some our favorite heaters, you may still have some questions. How do you really pick the best oil filled heater? There is no one uniform answer that will suit everyone. This is why we want you to learn all about their features, so that when you do make a decision, it will be an informed choice.
The truth is, heaters come with a variety of features and specs. You may want something small to keep you warm while you’re working, or you may prefer a full-blown heater that will keep the entire room comfortably toasty. You may care for portability, or you may not need it. Only you can know your exact needs. This is why in our buying guide, we will cover various aspects of oil filled heaters.
Read on below to find out all about it.
How do oil filled heaters work?
Have you seen an oil filled heater before? They usually resemble old-fashioned standard radiators you have surely seen in older buildings. Some oil filled heaters have a single panel.
However, these modern heaters are a lot smaller — and portable! They’re made out of fins that are joined to one another, and they have a control panel at the front of the heater. This allows you to control your unit— although many of them now come with a remote— allowing you to turn up the heat even when you’re sitting comfortably on your sofa.
Oil filled heaters usually plug into your home’s electric supply using a standard plug. Next, electricity enters a resistor within the heater. It is then converted into heat and warms up the oil from the inside of your heater. The heat then begins to circulate, spreading all over the room.
As oil filled heaters don’t need fans to spread warmth, they are particularly quiet, much like a regular radiator would have been. They also require next to no maintenance, as they most commonly don’t need oil refills.
Do oil filled electric heaters need to be refilled?
If you’re unfamiliar with them, we can see how your first thought upon hearing “oil filled heater” is that it must be a hassle to refill. Fortunately, that is not the case.
These heaters do not need to be refilled. When the electricity heats up an element within your heater, the element then heats up the oil, which then circulates around the fins of the heater. No oil is burned in this process, so oil levels never drop at all.
You’ll be pleased to know that modern oil heaters are designed with a lot of attention paid to security. The oil inside the heater will never reach a temperature that would be anywhere high enough for the heater to burst. As such, they will never leak.
What oil does an oil filled heater use?
The vast majority of modern oil filled heaters use a special type of oil that is called diathermic oil. It is widely considered to be a superb heat reservoir, which makes it ideal for heaters. It has a remarkably high heat capacity and boiling point.
Fun fact: diathermic oil actually has a boiling point that is three times higher than water. While it would be scary to use outside of a heater, it works great within one. It’s capable of producing and storing more heat and it doesn’t reach boiling point. This makes your oil filled heater secure.
This is also the reason why an oil filled heater will radiate heat even after it has been turned off. It takes a long time for diathermic oil to cool off, so you’re getting a lot of extra heating for free. Diathermic oil is the secret to oil filled heater efficiency.
What is better: an oil filled heater or a ceramic heater?
Oil filled heaters are known for their long lifespan, efficient heating, and the ability to increase temperatures in a short amount of time. But what are the differences between oil filled heaters and ceramic heaters?
● Oil filled heaters are much heavier. This is due to the fact that they have liquid (oil) inside them, whereas ceramic heaters do not.
● Ceramic heaters don’t take a long time to warm up. However, they also go cold the moment you turn them off. Oil heaters, on the other hand, take a little longer to heat up, but once they’re warm, they stay warm.
● Some oil filled heaters can become hot to the touch. Fortunately, modern models prevent this.
What to consider before buying an oil filled heater?
Now that you know how an oil filled heater works, it’s no surprise if you’re convinced you want to have one in your home. They’re excellent solutions when it comes to fighting the cold weather. Before you set out to pick one of the models we listed, we recommend being mindful of a few things first.
What will you use your heater for?
Before you decide to pick up an oil filled heater, you should consider what you plan to use it for. Heaters come in many shapes and sizes, but also types. An oil filled heater will excel in some areas, but not in others.
Ask yourself: where will this heater be located most of the time? They are portable, so you don’t have to feel tied down to a single room, but they also have a limit when it comes to how big an area they can keep warm.
If you’re looking to purchase a heater to use inside your home, you really can’t go wrong with an oil filled heater. However, if you want something to use in a shed or a garage, or some other spacious place with a lot of draughts, then an oil filled heater may not be the best pick.
Oil filled heaters rely on convection currents when it comes to heating up an area. If there is too much space and thus, too much air, you will not enjoy the benefits of their excellent heating as well as you would if you used one at home.
In other words: we heartily recommend oil filled heaters for at-home use, but not so much for the garage or the shed.
What type of design do you need?
As you have probably seen from our list of top 7 oil filled heaters, different heaters come with different features. The most important features are, of course, those that have to do with safety and security.
A well-designed heater will prevent surface heat, which will minimize the risk of you burning yourself when you touch the heater. You should always look for heaters that have relatively tall fins, as they are much cooler to the touch than their shorter counterparts. Always read the manual before you purchase your heater too, as manufacturers mention extra security features.
If you’re concerned with the temperature of the surface area, another hint is to look for heaters that have more fins. The more fins there are, the more the heat will be spread throughout them, thus not feeling anywhere near as hot to the touch.
If you’re looking for something portable — for example, a single heater to be used in the living room and the bedroom — then you need to consider two things: wheels and a carry handle.
Not every oil filled heater has one or even both of those things, and we really do not recommend transporting a heater without them. You can pick your heater up if it’s cold, but please do not attempt to do so when it’s hot. They burn people easily.
If your heater comes with a carry handle, you can safely transport it even when it’s still hot. You do need to be very careful not to touch the fins, but the handle makes it safe to move without losing any of the heat it has already accumulated.
For those who care about the design, modern space heaters are all rather stylish and will not be a sore spot in the decor of your home. There are even models that can be mounted on the wall, but remember that doing so removes the portability factor of your heater.
What is the right size?
This question is immensely important and it entirely depends on the space you plan to use your oil filled heater in. A small heater will not do much in a massive room. This is related to what we’ve already mentioned above — these heaters rely on convection currents, and if there is too much space and too much air, the heating will be mediocre.
Before you decide on an oil filled heater, measure the room you are planning to use it in. Multiply all of the measurements (in feet) together. Once you’ve found how big your room truly is in square meters, you will be able to tell whether a particular heater is suited for this room.
Most product descriptions or manuals will tell you how many square meters of heating capacity a particular model has. Keep in mind that you should always aim a little bit higher than what you truly need because then you will be able to account for draughts or poor insulation. Example: if your room is 300 square feet, buy a heater that can heat up to 350-400 square feet.
What type of material to choose?
This is a good question! When you buy an oil filled heater, one of the things you’re likely to care about is the durability of it. Some materials have a longer lifespan than others. If you want to buy a heater that will serve you well for years, here’s what to look out for.
The ideal material for heaters is steel. Steel is durable and strong, but still easy to maintain. Most importantly, it does not rust, and many manufacturers include an enamel coating to further prevent rusting.
While choosing a heater with more fins is highly beneficial, you have to keep in mind that the larger the surface, the more chances that something can go wrong. This is why it’s important that you look out for heaters that have been machine welded. These products offer superior durability and ensure that no oil leaks should take place.
Warranty – what to look out for?
A warranty may not be the first thing on your mind when you’re looking to buy a new oil filled heater, and we understand that. However, it’s still good to keep it in mind, as a heater is a bit of an investment. While they are rather affordable, there is no reason why you’d want to have to pay twice for your heater if it happens to fail.
If you use your heater a lot, you will usually find that any problems that may occur will do so within the first year of usage. This is why even a 1-year warranty is decent enough.
Of course, if you like a particular model that happens to have a longer warranty, that’s even better! However, do not let this be a deciding factor in choosing your heater. The most important thing is whether or not you enjoy the features that it comes with. Anything longer than a 1-year warranty (which you should always aim for) is a bonus as opposed to a must-have.
What wattage do you need in your electric oil filled heater?
While all oil filled heaters mention wattage in their product descriptions, it is a bit difficult to figure out what exactly that number means. You may be thinking something along the lines of “the more, the better”, and you’re not wrong. However, if you want to purchase a heater that fully fits your needs, it’s good to understand what wattage means.
A watt is a unit of power. It equals one joule of energy per second. In terms of heaters, watts tell you how big a space your heater can efficiently keep warm. As such, this is very important and tied to picking a heater with the correct size.
The general rule of thumb is that if you intend to use the heater in a larger room, aim for one with more wattage. For smaller spaces, even as low as 500 watts will do. Also, you should be aware that a high quality central heating system can reduce your energy bill and might be a better option for you than a oil filled heater.
Oil filled heaters come with a variety of features that make them stand out among the other types of heaters. Often energy-efficient, usually portable, capable of reaching very high temperatures, and known to stay warm for a long time, these heaters are a fantastic choice in many scenarios.
As oil filled heaters perform best when used at home, we heartily recommend picking one up if you want to come back to a warm, cozy space at the end of your workday. The heaters we have covered will work very well inside an office, the living room, the kitchen, the bedroom, or even the bathroom.
Much quieter than their counterparts that use fans to distribute heat, oil filled heaters will not distract you with annoying noise. You can sleep next to one and not hear a thing.
No one should have to suffer in a cold home. Instead of making yourself endure yet another winter when no amount of blankets seems to be enough, we recommend that you pick up a portable oil filled heater.
We hope that our list of heaters helped you make up your mind and allowed you to explore the market. We’re sure that once you take that next step and get yourself the best oil filled heater of your own, you will never want to look back.
