It updates information as quickly as every 10 seconds for wind chill and heat index so you get a better feel for how the weather actually feels outside. You can also get a host of other information from the console; not just all of the information from the ISS, but also moon phase, time and date, and a graph that allows you to analyze weather trends for nearly every data set.

Knowing the Difference in Types of Sensors

At the heart of every weather station is the sensor array. But not all sensors are created equally. In general, every weather sensor will have something to measure rain, temperature and humidity, and wind speed and direction. But how they do this can vary greatly depending on the type of sensor that is built in to the array.

Your anemometer is how your sensor array detects wind speed and sometimes Direction. Almost every anemometer is broken down into three common types. Note that most anemometers do not detect wind direction, so a wind vane is usually paired with them.

    • Vane – a Vane anemometer is one that has a propeller that is parallel to the direction of the wind. It looks almost like a handheld fan. This type of anemometer is most commonly used where the direction of air motion is constant. However because it can also be used to log temperature, humidity, and dew point, it is sometimes used in weather stations.
    • Thermal – this type of anemometer is based on the physics principle that wind flowing over a hot object will cool it down. So a wire or metal element is placed where the wind can blow over it. As the wind increases the wire cools more and more. And a constant temperature anemometer, power is increased to maintain a constant temperature. The more power that is used the colder the wire is getting, so the speed of the wind can be calculated. In a constant power thermal anemometer, a constant amount of power is put Through the Wire, and the resistance change is monitored. A sensor then detects how much power is being put Through the Wire, which tells how fast the wind is going.
    • Cup – this is the most common type of anemometer that you will see on a weather station. It is basically three or four half sphere cups that are mounted on a shaft. The shaft is usually vertical and the cups are attached to the shaft by horizontal arms. The cups then rotate around the shaft and the speed that they rotate allows for calculation of wind speed. The three cup anemometer is more accurate than the four cups and is faster to respond to gusts.
  • Rain Gauges

When it comes to measuring rainfall, they all operate under the same principle. Rain is collected in a cylindrical funnel which is in measured by different mechanisms. There are five different mechanisms of collecting and measuring rainfall.

    • Graduated Cylinder – in this type of rain gauge, water is collected by a cylindrical funnel and poured directly into a graduated cylinder. This rain gauge must be measured and emptied on a daily basis which means that it is not suitable for use in an unmanned situation.
    • Tipping Bucket – a tipping bucket rain gauge is an automatic ring meter that uses a collector funnel with a narrow pipe at the bottom. The pipe then drops water onto a finely balanced seesaw that has small buckets on either side. At any given time, one bucket is underneath the pipe. When enough water collects the weight makes it drop in if you had self and lifts the opposite bucket into position. This process will keep repeating as rain falls. Each time a bucket drops, it triggers an electronic switch. This means that a specific amount of rain has been collected in a tipping bucket. By counting the number of signals, rainfall can be calculated.
    • Weighing Precipitation – a weighing precipitation gauge is essentially a receiving bucket that is mounted onto a scale. As the receiving bucket gets more rain, the increased weight tells you how much rain is in the bucket. The major advantage to this type of rain gauge is that it can also capture solid forms of precipitation such as snow. Some of these Wayne precipitation gauges are also heated to melt snow, and also self-emptying.
    • Optical – an optical ring gauge uses laser diode and photo sensors which are placed on opposite sides below a row of funnels. Each panel has a small opening through which raindrops form when enough precipitation has accumulated. When the Raindrop gets big enough at falls from the funnel and through the space between the laser diode and the photo sensor. When the Raindrop falls through the beam of light the photo sensor detects it. Optical rain sensors are able to not only measure the amount of rainfall but also the intensity and frequency because of how precise the photosensitive detectors are.
    • Acoustic – an acoustic rain gauge is also known as a hydrophone. It is used to measure rainfall over large bodies of water such as the ocean or lakes. The device is placed underneath the water surface and senses and measures the impact of raindrops as it strikes the surface of the water above.     • Resistance – a resistance thermometer works under the physical property that electrical resistance differs depending on the temperature of metallic wires. Usually a resistance thermometer has a platinum wire which is wound into a coil and mounted within a steel tube. As the metal wire heats up or cools down the measured resistance is directly proportional to how hot or cold it is. The coil is then connected to electronics that can accurately measure the resistance and compute the temperature based on that. These types of thermometers have much faster response times and are the standard in professional weather instrumentation.
    • Bimetallic – a bimetallic strip thermometer has two different strips of metal that are bonded on top of each other metals expand at different rates depending on the temperature. A change in temperature will cause the two metals to bend differently causing a significant angle. This angle of deflection is then measured using a dial scale. The dial scale is manually read, which makes this type of thermometer usually inappropriate for an unmanned station.
    • Constant volume thermometer – a constant volume thermometer has a bulb which contains a fixed amount of a specific gas. This bulb is connected to a pressure gauge. As temperature increases the volume of the gas increases and pressure goes up. The pressure gauge records this change and then temperature can be calculated. Constant volume thermometers are usually not used in other stations but because they are some of the most accurate thermometers, they are usually used to calibrate others.
