How the Dyson Fan Does its Magic
There’s a pretty neat YouTube video by Dyson that shows how the Air Multiplier works, and the graphics and soothing voice do a fairly good job of explaining things and how the Dyson fan stays quiet. But how does that tiny fan in the base cause such a large air output through the fan?
Essentially, this is how it works. The small volume of air is forced through the small opening in the Dyson fan. Air has a property known as entrainment, where it attracts other air particles and makes them move with it. So when the Dyson fan shoots air out through a small opening, the air is coming out at a tremendous relative velocity.
At that high rate of speed, it comes from the smooth surface of the fan into the rough and tumble world of the surrounding air. And there, it grabs onto, bangs into, and pushes other air molecules along as well. That small stream of air then jostles a larger volume into moving. And because of the shape of the fan, that is, the large oval, the fan is able to focus that air flow right into the center where it can pick up and move the most amount of air possible.
So there you have it. By taking advantage of the physical and fluid dynamics of air, Dyson was able to create a fan that seemed to magically create air current where there was none previously.
