How Do I Measure the Size of the Room I Need to Cool?

An air conditioner with too high of a BTU will cool the small space rapidly. Do not be deceived. Rapid cooling is not the intent. Because the air conditioning unit has achieved the target temperature rapidly, the energy efficient air conditioner will turn off or enter an energy saving mode.

Because quick cooling does not allow the humidity in the room to properly decrease or be removed, the humidity will remain high. High humidity will cause the temperature of the room to rise as quickly as it was cooled. (Additionally, a room with high humidity will be uncomfortable and sticky.)

However, when it comes to the functionality of your air conditioner, the returning high temperature or high humidity will cause the air conditioner to turn the condenser on. This will rapidly cool the air, and the air conditioning unit will shut off again once the desired temperature is reached. This process will continue, causing your air conditioner to overwork.

Alternatively, too small of a BTU is just as harmful. An air conditioner with an inadequate BTU size for the space needed to cool will constantly run the condenser in an attempt to achieve the desired set temperature. Continuously running of the condenser is just as critical as a condenser that constantly starts and stops.

Finding the correct BTU size you need for the space you have is imperative. Not only will it extend the lifespan of your air conditioner, it will also make the air temperature more comfortable. How Do I Determine the Correct BTU Size I Need?

But not all equally-sized rooms have the same conditions, so some adjustments may have to be made.

For this section, we will use the following subject as our example:

450 square feet at 10,000 BTU

Upstairs or Direct Sunlight

If the room or area that you need to cool is located upstairs or is located downstairs but in direct sunlight, you will want to adjust the BTU accordingly to compensate.

The recommended BTU increase for rooms that are upstairs or exposed to extensive direct sunlight is an additional 10% BTU.

Using the example above, an additional 10% of 10,000 BTU would add an extra 1,000 BTU; therefore, the total recommended BTU for your area has now increased to 11,000.

Additional BTU for More than Two Total Occupants

A room may typically have one or two occupants, but what if the room you are cooling will have three or more occupants a majority of the time?

If the room or area in which you are cooling will have more than two people, it is recommended to add 600 BTU per each additional occupant.

Using the example above with the increased BTU of 11,000, let’s say there are four total occupants in the room at all times. These two additional occupants will add an additional 1,200 BTU, bringing the total recommended BTU for your area from 11,000 to 12,200 BTU.

Therefore, the original recommended 10,000 BTU for the 450-square-foot area would not sufficiently cool the room with these conditions. By appropriately taking location, sun exposure, and room occupants into consideration, you are able to avoid an inadequately cooled room by choosing a slightly higher BTU to cool accordingly.

Using the recommended chart above, you would want to go to the next highest BTU above 12,200. You would not want to choose the lesser 12,000 BTU. Instead, to cool effectively and sufficiently, you would want to choose the 14,000 BTU to ensure proper cooling.

Kitchens & Adjoining Rooms

If you will be installing your air conditioning unit in your kitchen, you will want to add an extra 4,000 BTU.

Typically, kitchens are not 100% closed off. They usually will have an unconfined opening into another room or area. As square footage is determined by the confinement of a room, you will have to determine the square footage of both the kitchen as well as the room the kitchen opens up to.

For example, let’s say the square footage of your kitchen is roughly 150 square feet, and the kitchen leads into an adjoining dining room of 120 square feet. You will need to add these two room sizes together to get the total square feet. Then, you will use that square footage total to determine your starting point for BTU.

150 + 120 = 270 square feet

According to the chart above, the recommended BTU size for 270 square feet is 7,000 square feet. Therefore, your starting BTU size is 7,000 BTU.
